The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly..Week 5: “Sardis: WAKE UP!”

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Hey everyone:

Here is the text for this week! Have fun with this one! And don’t forget to try to decide if it is a good, bad, or ugly church.

———————————————-

Rev. 3:1-6

1″To the angel[a] of the church in Sardis write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[b]of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. 3Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. 4Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. 6He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Footnotes:

1. Revelation 3:1 Or messenger; also in verses 7 and 14
2. Revelation 3:1 Or the sevenfold Spirit

Grace UMC (where we serve the homeless and low income… needs supplies…

Monday, March 31st, 2008

The food pantry at Grace is bare! On Easter Sunday we served 75 households. This Sunday 86 households were served: totaling 64 children, 136 adults and 12 seniors. At the end of the night we were giving out food bags that simply contained one can of vegetables and a package of Ramen Noodles.

We are in desperate need of supplies. We need tuna, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, mac & cheese, boxes of single serve instant oatmeal, Chef Boy-R-Dee (pop top cans), peanut butter, Hormel chili (pop top), beef stew (pop top), complete meal kits (with meat), toothbrushes, powdered laundry detergent, pads, and tampons.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Supplies are needed ASAP. I am able to pick up donations during the week. I can be reached on my cell phone at 859 743-6115 or by email, millerkels@fuse.net.

Thank you and God bless

New discussion Series, “Suprised by Hope”

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Surprised by Hope
A Discussion Series about Life, Death, & Resurrection
Overview:

Week 1: 1 Thess 4:13-18 The Sleep Death
Week 2: Philippians 3:17-21 Glorious Body
Week 3: 1 Corinthians 15:12-19 What If We Were Wrong?
Week 4: 1 Corinthians 15:20-34 Reign of Christ and Our Present Living!
Week 5: 1 Corinthians 15:35-58 Living in Mystery & Victory

————————————————————————————–

Since it is Easter time and we are celebrating Jesus rising from the dead, I thought what better a time to talk about our death, and following Christ in resurrection, and what it means for us and the way we live our lives now! Maybe we can journey through a road that is filled with many misconceptions and fear about death, resurrection, and heaven, and the hope that we can all live by today and in the future!

This series will be loosely based off of the new N.T. Wright Book, titled the same as the series, Surprised By Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church (why reinvent the wheel right?) So, even though we will not be discussing the book, I would like to encourage each and everyone of you to pick up the book and have a read, I will be doing the same over the next couple of weeks and would love to invite you into discussion!

Here is a link to purchase the book via amazon.com:

or you can probably find it at your local Barnes & Noble Bookstore or Christian Bookstore.

I can’t wait to see the discussions here and @ each of your Gatherings!

Lent lectionary Discussion series for this week…..

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Hey everyone:

Here are the texts for this week’s discussion:

Psalm 130

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;

2 O Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.

3 If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins,
O Lord, who could stand?

4 But with you there is forgiveness;
therefore you are feared.

5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I put my hope.

6 My soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.

7 O Israel, put your hope in the LORD,
for with the LORD is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.

8 He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins.

AND

John 11: 17-45

17On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18Bethany was less than two miles[a] from Jerusalem, 19and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

21“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

27“Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ,[b] the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

28And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

32When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34“Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

35Jesus wept.

36Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

38Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39“Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” 40Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

43When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him.

===============================

We still need help for Via Crucis, lots of ideas are being thrown around and we need to get together and talk a litle bit more about it… so please email D.G. if you would like to help… and your help can be just giving ideas and helping us think through the station, it does not include your presence for long hours on end… unless you want to help in that way, heh… Thanks!

Oh and please be in prayer for Court and Kelly Miller, Kelly is planned to be induced to go into labor some time Friday night-Saturday morning! Thank you! KUTPs!!!
